ENS DAO Newsletter: Translation Initiative

Bring ENS DAO Newsletter to the global community in their native language

BACKGROUND

The ENS DAO Newsletter started in March 2022, with the objective of providing transparency into ENS and ENS DAO through a carefully curated, concise, and easy-to-read bi-weekly publication.

The goal was to consistently release a carefully crafted summary of the latest news, developments, and discussions -- designed to reach the widest audience possible.

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the very first edition, we will soon publish our 30th edition, we are fast approaching 300 subscribers on Substack, and we are closing in to 700 followers on our Twitter!

TRANSLATION INITIATIVE

As the newsletter continues to reach a wider and wider audience and accumulates more subscribers, one aspect we could have never imagined is just how diverse, multinational, and multilingual the reader base would become.

Currently through Substack alone, there are subscribers from over 50 countries!

What are the preferred languages of our subscribers?

The current top spoken languages of our Substack community, based on their country's official language(s) or de facto National language, are as follows:

  1. English - 123 readers
  2. Chinese, German, Spanish - 16 readers each
  3. French - 13 readers
  4. Japanese - 8 readers
  5. Hindi - 7 readers

...And these are just the current largest language groups!

GRANT SPECIFICATION

In alignment with our original objective of reaching the widest audience possible, we are requesting a grant to fund the translation of each new edition of the ENS DAO Newsletter into as many of our reader's native languages as possible.

  • Since November 2022, community contributor Bob Jiang has already taken it upon himself to translate new editions of the newsletter into 🇨🇳 Chinese, without any expectation of receiving any form of compensation for his hard work. His selfless contribution has facilitated the timely dissemination of important ENS DAO news to the Chinese speaking community.

We would love to be able to retroactively compensate him for his past work, and to continue showing our appreciation by funding this effort going forward.

  • Community contributor Mayra has also generously volunteered to begin translating new editions of the newsletter into both 🇪🇸 Spanish and 🇩🇪 German, with no expection of receiving any compensation for the work involved.

This is an invaluable service that will allow the information compiled in the ENS DAO Newsletter to be understood by a wider audience of non-English speakers. We believe this work should be encouraged and rewarded with financial compensation.

  • Other community-sourced language translations will be actively pursued, including 🇫🇷 French, 🇯🇵 Japanese, 🇮🇳 Hindi, 🇷🇺 Russian, 🇰🇷 Korean, and more.

Due to the technical nature of the terms used and information presented in the newsletter, relying solely on machine translation is an insufficient solution, and instead, the information often must be reinterpreted in order to be effectively understood by non-English speakers. This is a time-consuming process to accomplish effectively.
